Located at 51 Main Street, Kapunda, available from the Visitor Information Centre is details of a walking tour of some of the historic sites in Kapunda.
Kapunda Museum
The museum is located in the former Baptist Church which was built in 1866, and holds many items which tell the story of Kapunda. In addition you can purchase a map and details of a Kapunda Heritage Trail - which is a driving tour around Kapunda.
Map the Miner
Map Kernow or Map the Miner is a large statue which stands next to the main street of Kapunda welcoming you to this beautiful town. The statue represents the contribution of the Cornish Miners to the development of the Kapunda mine and area.
"Map", as the statue is affectionately known, was unveiled on June 5, 1988.
Main Street Architecture
The main street of Kapunda reflects the prosperity of the town's mining years. The High School, Sir Sydney Kidman Hotel and the ANZ Bank are examples of the beautiful architecture which is characteristic of Kapunda. Walk down the main street and have a look, make sure you stop in at the Kapunda Bakery for a bite!
Herald Printing Office
Built in 1866, the Herald Printing Office housed Kapunda's first Newspaper the Northern Star, later the Kapunda Herald was produced in this building until 1850.
Mine Square Cottages
They were built in 1845-1849 and are located in Hare Street, Kapunda. They were made from mud and stone, and one remains of these three rows of six connected cottages.
Kapunda Mine
Copper was first discovered in Kapunda in 1842, and the mine was the first significant metal mine in Australia. The mine operated from 1844 - 1878, and was partially responsible for the economic development of South Australia.
Evidence of the mine is still visible and illustrates the activity in this area in early South Australia. The Mine Lookout enables you to see the open cut mine from a vantage point. You can also walk around the edges of the mine and there are signed descriptions indicating features of the mine. |
